Moving

So how many household moves have you made in your lifetime? It’s been 11 for Gary and me since we married in 1968. Each one has been a major challenge with all the details and changes to look after. This week we brought my sister and her husband down from Thornbury, west of Collingwood, to live in their lovely new seniors’ residence unit about five minutes from our home for better support for them. Reaching 91 and 90 years of age respectively, it was no small fete with all the stress involved for them. We are very grateful to our daughter Sara and her friend who helped cut out about half of all their belongings and managed to distribute them in one way or another. Why do we collect so much stuff that, in reality, we will never use again, nor will they be wanted by our children and grandchildren? I have got to continue telling myself to keep getting rid of some of our stuff week by week.

Another important, exciting move for our family was when our youngest son Lee Chul Min came from South Korea to be adopted by us. He travelled that long way to New York City with a support person where we picked him up and brought him to our home in St. Catharines, Ontario. He was just turning six and arrived wearing a red shirt, white shorts and carrying a small knapsack on his back. No other baggage for him! We never have regretted that decision particularly when we have watched God’s amazing work in his life through the years as he is now a grown man of 45 years with a wife and two children. They just came back from a visit to his old orphanage where they met up with the elderly owners and their son. Someone in our family should write his biography.

Also, this week a filming company came to Churchville to create a 30 second commercial on Mayonnaise or Ketchup at a neighbour’s home. They moved in about 10 large moving vans filled with all their needed gear for a day and about 70 employees. This is a regular activity as they move around the city filming in different locations for one reason or another. We definitely had a traffic jam that day with people trying to take a short cut through our little village back to their homes after a hard day’s work.

Do you remember God’s call on Abram’s life from the Israelite nation in the first book of the Bible, Genesis 12: 1-9.
God asked him to leave the country of Haran at his ripe old age of 75 where he lived with his family and journey to Canaan, the land God was going to give him and his offspring. He was obedient and so it happened. Can you imagine travelling all that way with his family members, other people they had acquired and all their possessions and livestock? There were no professional movers in that day. He knew that God would be with them all the way even though it was a step of faith.

As we look forward to the fall, we know that many new families have moved into Milton at this time of year because of all the house construction that has been built over the past few months. Milton continues to be a strong growing community. Please pray for our Hillside Church and Scott Lockhart’s leadership that we will be able to draw some of these families to our church where they will be able to develop new friendships in a new town for them. Scott will be auditing another course at Heritage Bible College and Seminary along with reacquainting himself with students he related well to last year. He is hoping one or more of those students will come and be involved with our church particularly within our outreach program.
