Spreading Seed

Apr 30

“So how did I get so many?” I sked our horticulturist neighbour.  I was referring to about 20 pretty violets scattered throughout the lawn in our backyard.  Previous years there had been only three or four.  She responded that when we had our flood two years ago with our backyard being full of water, seeds were probably spread here and there.  I do like these flowers; however, another plant with purplish flowers is creeping charlie I fight with every year.  Its strong roots travel under the surface of the earth resulting in killing the grass over a large patch.  My solution is sprinkling powdered Borax in boiling water over the area.  Let me know if you have discovered any other method. It is really interesting how God has created plants to propagate themselves in various ways.  Oh yes, I must not forget about wildlife helping in seed spreading.

From day one, it has been the goal of Hillside Church to spread the seed of God’s Good News throughout Milton.  Sadly, with too many obstacles to get over year by year, it seems we haven’t really accomplished much.  But then a few years ago a family attended our church for a short while.  Their fifteen-year-old daughter had all kinds of questions about our church.  Zeilah is now a twenty-year-old university student whom we surprisingly got reacquainted with about a month ago when she became our new server at Swiss Chalet.  She is the same energetic person, still full of questions with a growing desire to lead a purposeful life.  She even attends a Christian group at her university.  You never know!

Please pray that we can be patient while waiting for approval from the Canada Summer Jobs program so we can spread more Good News seed in Milton this summer.  Scott and Chrissy Lockhart have been working hard on establishing themselves in this community.  They didn’t receive good news from their landlord recently who would like to sell the townhouse they just moved into.  Maybe they will be able to find a bigger house on the edge of town.  Have you learned that life is never easy?  Chrissy sent out a missionary support letter last week to her contact list.  Please pray that she will be able to raise the monthly funds she needs required for working for Youth for Christ.

Another hard worker in spreading seed is our friend Thomas in Myanmar.  He and his fourteen-year-old son have just finished building a worship/study building beside their orphanage for their orphans to use.  They have been very fearful the last few weeks when hearing bombing near their hometown.  The military regime has decided to go after Christians.  They would appreciate your prayers for their safety plus they are looking for funds to purchase school supplies for their orphans come June.  Thomas’ wife Maven is expecting their third child in August.

Matthew 13, Mark 4 and Luke 8 in the New Testament of the Bible all record a great parable that Jesus told his followers about a farmer spreading seed.  It is interesting to note that the farmer was responsible for this activity, but he was not responsible for the end result of thriving plants which was left up to God.

Are you getting ready to spread some seed this spring?  Happy planting in our wonderful outdoors!
